Currently US fresh tilapia imports are up over 17 percent YTD compared with year ago levels and are at record highs. Yet despite an overall increase in supplies, prices in the US have hit all-time highs. In November, Urner Barry’s per pound price for a C&SA 3-5 oz. fresh tilapia fillet are up over 3 percent year-over-year averaging between $4.00 and $4.15 FOB Miami.
Source: Urner Barry The parallel increase in both imported volumes and prices in the US this year is a result of buyers forced to compete in new markets for product as exports from a couple of top supplying nations have fallen in 2013. First, Ecuador has steadily curbed its fresh tilapia operations in favor of shrimp production since 2009. And since the EMS-induced global shrimp shortage this year, Ecuadorian farmers have ramped up shrimp production considerably. Through September Ecuador’s YTD fresh tilapia exports to the US are down over 28 percent. Meanwhile, Honduras, which had succeeded Ecuador as the top US fresh tilapia supplier since 2011, has seen its US exports fall 3 percent YTD in 2013. But a number of other C&SA countries have ramped up production to counter the Ecuadorian and Honduran shortfalls.  Source: Urner Barry Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico have filled the void with notable export increases from all three countries. But this shift to new markets has forced US buyers to compete more heavily for product and replacement costs hit record levels in September to $3.42 per pound after months of gradual increases. Now, the current YTD price per pound is averaging an all-time high $3.32. The hike in replacements has reverberated down the supply chain resulting in the record high prices now seen in the US market since September.
